Phonics

At St Ives Infant and Nursery school we believe that phonics is the key to enabling children to begin their journey in learning how to read and write with independence, fluency and confidence leading to a love of reading and writing.

We teach phonics through Letters and Sounds and have developed a system of teaching phonics unique to our children's needs.  We use a whole class teaching approach enabling children of all abilities and experience to access age appropriate learning with support offered to those who need it through pre-teach activities and small group 'keep up' sessions.

In every lesson the children practice recognising sounds they already know, learn a new sound or way to spell a sound, apply this in reading words and a passage and then finally write words and a sentence.  Linking their phonics learning to reading and writing is important to us to ensure children are able to link their learning from one skill to another.
